Blood Bank Annual Report

In the year 2004, the Indian Medical Association, Coimbatore branch one
of the oldest in the entire country, formed in 1924, wanted to do something
that would be useful to the community especially the ailing patients in
Thus the idea of starting a blood bank took shape and Rotary Club of
Coimbatore Midtown came forward with a donation of Rs.6 lakhs for the
project ,through the Mahaveers textile group. Soon the Freemasons of
Coimbatore , who are well known for their charitable activities joined the
project. Thus a public charitable trust was formed in Dec 2004 , through the
active involvement of Dr.S.R.Krishnamurthy and Dr.B.Jayaraman who were
heading the IMA at that time.
The task of getting the project going was given to Dr.K.Raghu, a
qualified Blood. Specialist also an active Freemason and a past secretary of
The government approval for the blood bank came in Dec 2004.  On March 2nd.
2005, the blood bank was inaugurated. To start with we were issuing whole
blood and due to the active support of many voluntary donors and hospitals
the blood bank had a truly good start.
The initial years were difficult because awareness about blood donation
was a major problem and in this , we were ably assisted by Mr.Arun Gokuldas,
one of Coimbatores well known face in voluntary blood donation, having
donated blood more than a 100 times. He along with Dr.K.Raghu made several
awareness programmes aimed at young donors in colleges.
The blood bank became a 24 hour service in Feb 2007 to cater to
emergencies. the motto of the blood bank  has been from the very beginning
Courtesy to the donor and compassion to patients and profit was neverlooked
at. So the blood bank became very popular with voluntary donors, donor
groups, film artistes fan clubs and corporates.
In the year 2011, the IMA decided to go in for a major expansion
programme since blood component separation had to be started. This was a 50
lakh project and was made possible with donations from public, Rotarians, doctors, nursing homes and Freemasons. Thanks to the efforts of Dr.R.Palaniswamy, then President of the IMA and Dr.K.Rathinaswamy, and
many others, we were able to collect Rs.50 lakhs within a short time of 6
months and also complete the construction work of the new blood bank
The new premises and equipment were inaugurated on Dec 25, 2011 by
Dr.Kailash Kumar and dignitaries from the Rotary and Freemasons
The government approval for separation of blood components was obtained
in 2013 May, with assistance from Dr.L.P.Thangavelu who had just assumed
office as the President of  Tamilnadu State IMA.
At present the blood bank is supplying all blood components at reasonable
rates, keeping in view the charitable nature of our trust. We regularly
conduct  Blood donation camps with the help of various social and corporate
groups. Our aim is to provide blood to the poor and needy at all times at a
nominal cost and thus help save precious lives.
Our blood bank is governed by a board of trustees chaired by the
President of Coimbatore IMA,  Dr.A.K.Ravikumar. The other trustees comprise
